Although rooted in biography, La Diva Turca has been conceived neither as a documentary nor as a traditional musical. My intention has been to translate Leyla Gencer’s life into a cinematic dramatic narrative — one that privileges emotional truth, psychological depth, and character over archival reconstruction. This is not merely the story of a great soprano; it is the portrait of a woman navigating ambition, identity, exile, and resistance in a rapidly shifting political and cultural landscape.
Rather than focusing exclusively on her vocal mastery, the screenplay centers on the human cost of greatness: the pressures of representing a young republic abroad, the rivalries and prejudices within the European opera establishment, the political turbulence following the 1960 coup, and the personal sacrifices required to sustain an international career. Through Gencer’s journey, the film explores the tension between national identity and global recognition — a theme that resonates strongly in today’s fragmented cultural climate.
